2026 Michigan home services benchmark
We studied 100 Michigan contractors on Google Maps. Here is what the most visible companies did differently.
A benchmark of plumbing, HVAC and electrical companies across ten Michigan markets, measured on 4,410 Google Maps grid points.
Section 01
Executive summary
One hundred plumbing, HVAC and electrical companies across ten Michigan markets, scored on profile, reputation, website and Maps visibility, then split into the 25 most visible and the 25 least visible.
The gap between the most visible companies on Google Maps and the least visible ones is not subtle. Across the 25 strongest and 25 weakest performers, the strong group appeared in the top three results at 26.5% of grid points. The weak group managed 2.7%. The weak group was completely absent from results at a median of 83.0% of the points where their competitors appeared.
What separated them was rarely one dramatic advantage. It was a stack of ordinary operational habits: a steady flow of new reviews rather than a large historical pile, an owner who replies to reviews, a website that actually loads and has a page for each service, and a phone number a customer can tap. Star rating, which is the metric most owners obsess over, barely separated the two groups at all.
The single clearest split: the strong group posted a median of 11 new reviews in the last 90 days. The weak group posted 1. Lifetime review counts differed by 4.54x. Recent review counts differed by 11.0x.
This is a descriptive benchmark, not a ranking-factor study. We did not test what causes rankings and we make no causal claims. We describe what the visible companies had in common and what the invisible ones were missing.
Section 02
Why we ran this study
Home services owners in Michigan hear a great deal of advice about Google. Very little of it is grounded in what their actual competitors are doing. The advice is either national, generic, or sold by whoever is charging for the fix.
We wanted a local, measured answer to a specific question: what separates Michigan plumbing, HVAC and electrical companies with strong Google Maps visibility from weaker competitors?
Google Maps matters disproportionately for these trades. A homeowner with a leaking water heater or a dead furnace opens Maps, taps one of the first few results, and calls. If a company is not in the top three at the point on the map where that homeowner is standing, it is effectively not in that conversation. Rankings also change with location, which means a company can dominate one neighborhood and be invisible four miles away, and never know it.
So we measured visibility the way a customer experiences it: at 49 separate geographic points per keyword, for three keywords per company, for 100 companies.

What was studied
One hundred companies, allocated 34 plumbing, 33 HVAC and 33 electrical, across ten Michigan markets chosen to cover large metros, mid-sized cities, dense suburbs and a smaller exurban market.

For each company we recorded its Google Business Profile data, its latest 20 reviews, its website, and its ranking position at every point of a 7x7 geographic grid for three keywords. Every company received a score out of 100 across four equally weighted categories: Profile Foundation, Reputation, Website and Conversion, and Maps Visibility.
Section 04
Methodology
Everything below was applied identically to all 100 companies. The full record, including every excluded listing and every raw grid point, is available in the study workbook.
Selection
Companies were discovered with three standard searches per market: plumber [city] mi, hvac company [city] mi and electrician [city] mi. From each result list we took the company at position 1, the company at position 3, and one company drawn at random from positions 6 to 15. In the industry receiving the market's tenth slot, we added one company drawn at random from positions 4 to 10. Random draws used a fixed seed so the sample is reproducible.
Listings were excluded only for a documented reason: sponsored placement, permanently closed, outside the market, lead-generation or duplicate listing, ineligible business type, or already selected in another market. Thirty-five listings were excluded and each exclusion is logged with its reason.
Measuring visibility
Ranking was measured with a single tool applied consistently to every company: a proprietary geo-coordinate grid scanner built by Magnet Digital AI. For each company and each keyword, the scanner queries Google Maps from 49 distinct coordinates arranged in a 7x7 grid and records the company's position in the local result list at each point.

Brighton / Howell uses a 7.5 mile radius because business density there is far lower than in the metro markets; a 5 mile grid would have produced a grid mostly covering farmland. This deviation is disclosed rather than hidden.

Scoring
Each company was scored out of 100 across four 25-point categories. Sub-scores that compare companies to each other were assigned by percentile quintile: the top 20 percent of an industry scored 5, the bottom 20 percent scored 1.

No company in this study reached the market leader band. The highest total score was 80.8.
Documented deviation. Percentile sub-scores were calculated within each industry across all ten markets rather than within each market. A market cell holds only three or four companies of a given trade, which is too few to split into quintiles.
Quality control
Ten of the 100 companies were selected at random and independently re-collected from scratch after the main data collection, then compared field by field against the frozen dataset. 140 field comparisons produced 1 mismatch, an error rate of 0.71 percent. An error rate above 5 percent would have triggered a recheck of key measurements for all 100 companies; it was not triggered.
The single mismatch was a plumbing company whose newest review was 91 days old at first collection and 6 days old at recheck. A new review had been posted between the two pulls. This is real-world data change rather than measurement error, and it is a useful reminder that every number here is a snapshot.

The five most important findings
Comparisons below are between the 25 companies with the highest Maps visibility scores and the 25 with the lowest. All figures are medians, which resist distortion from a handful of very large companies.

Finding 01: Review velocity separated the groups far more than lifetime review count
The strong group had a median of 186 lifetime reviews against 41 for the weak group, a 4.54x difference. But recent activity split them roughly 11x: 11 reviews in the last 90 days versus 1. Eight companies in the weak group had more than 100 lifetime reviews and were still nearly invisible; one had over 2,600. Meanwhile three companies in the strong group ranked well with fewer than 60 reviews in total. Stated plainly: a large pile of old reviews did not keep companies visible, and a small but active review stream did not stop them from being visible.
Finding 02: Owner responses were nearly universal in the strong group and nearly absent in the weak group
Among the latest 20 reviews for each company, the strong group's median response rate was 85 percent. The weak group's median was 0 percent. Twenty-two of the 25 strong companies replied to at least half their recent reviews. Fifteen of the 25 weak companies replied to none at all. Across the full sample of 100, 28 companies had not replied to a single one of their last 20 reviews.
Finding 03: Nearly half the weak group had no working website
Every company in the strong group had a website and every one of those websites loaded successfully. In the weak group, 32 percent had no website listed at all, and only 56 percent had a site that actually loaded when we tried it. Three sites in the study returned server errors or missing pages. Depth differed too: the strong group had a median of 5 dedicated service pages, the weak group had 0.
Finding 04: Weak companies were not ranked lower, they were absent
The weak group did not simply rank in position 12 instead of position 3. At a median of 83.0 percent of the grid points scanned, they did not appear in the results at all. The strong group was missing from just 4.1 percent of points. Top-ten coverage was 68.7 percent versus 8.2 percent. Visibility in Maps behaves less like a ladder and more like a light switch across geography.
Finding 05: The bar for visibility is set by the trade, not by a universal number
Electrical companies made up 16 of the 25 strongest performers, with a median of 55 reviews. Plumbing contributed only 2, and the plumbers who did reach the strong group carried a median of 417 reviews. In other words, the review volume that makes an electrician dominant in Novi would leave a plumber mid-pack in Detroit. Owners should benchmark against their own trade in their own market, not against a national rule of thumb.
Section 06
Three things that did not separate the groups
Non-findings are as useful as findings. These are the things we expected to matter and could not show mattered in this sample.
1. Star rating
The strong group's median rating was 4.8. The weak group's was 4.7. Nine of the 25 weak companies were rated 4.8 or higher, and two of them held a perfect 5.0 while ranking near the bottom of their market. Rating is a floor, not a lever: below roughly 4.0 it is a liability, but pushing from 4.7 to 4.9 did not distinguish visible companies from invisible ones here.
2. Market size
Median total scores landed within six points of each other across every market type: large metros 59.6, mid-sized cities 61.3, suburbs 56.9 and the small exurban market 62.0. Being in Detroit was not harder or easier than being in Brighton. Competition intensity varied by trade far more than by city size.
3. Contact forms
40 percent of the strong group had a contact form on the homepage against 28 percent of the weak group, a difference of three companies out of 25. That is well inside noise for a sample this size. Click-to-call was a different story (92 percent versus 48 percent), which fits how home services customers actually behave in an emergency.
We also attempted to measure the Google Business Profile services list, the business description and additional categories. These fields are not reliably exposed in the Maps interface: the services list was detectable for 1 company out of 100 and the description for none. We report them as unmeasurable rather than pretending they were absent.

Plumbing results
34 companies. Median rating 4.8. Median top-ten coverage 23.4 percent, and a median of 58.2 percent of grid points where the company did not appear at all. 2 of these companies landed in the study's strongest 25 and 10 in the weakest 25. 7 had not replied to any of their last 20 reviews, and 4 had no website listed on their profile.

What stands out. Plumbing was the most crowded and most nationally contested trade in the study. Franchise and multi-location brands occupied a large share of position-one results, and the median plumbing company was absent from 58.2 percent of grid points. Only 2 plumbing companies reached the strongest 25, while 10 fell into the weakest 25, the worst ratio of the three trades. The plumbers who did win were carrying several hundred reviews and replying to most of them.
For an independent plumber the practical implication is that competing on the head term alone against a national brand is expensive. The grids showed far more open space on the emergency and water heater phrases than on the bare term "plumber".

HVAC results
33 companies. Median rating 4.9. Median top-ten coverage 23.8 percent, and a median of 54.4 percent of grid points where the company did not appear at all. 7 of these companies landed in the study's strongest 25 and 6 in the weakest 25. 7 had not replied to any of their last 20 reviews, and 2 had no website listed on their profile.

What stands out. HVAC was the most balanced trade: 7 companies in the strongest 25 and 6 in the weakest. Review themes were also the most specific of any trade, with furnace repair, furnace installation and humidifier installation appearing hundreds of times in customer language. HVAC companies also showed the strongest seasonal review clustering, which makes a 90-day review count a sharper measure than a lifetime count in this trade specifically.
The visible HVAC companies tended to have deeper websites than the visible electricians, several with 20 or more service pages and dedicated pages for the towns they serve.

Electrical results
33 companies. Median rating 4.7. Median top-ten coverage 46.9 percent, and a median of 33.3 percent of grid points where the company did not appear at all. 16 of these companies landed in the study's strongest 25 and 9 in the weakest 25. 14 had not replied to any of their last 20 reviews, and 5 had no website listed on their profile.

What stands out. Electrical was the most winnable trade in this sample. The median electrical company was missing from 33.3 percent of grid points, far better than plumbing or HVAC, and electricians took 16 of the 25 strongest positions with a median of only 55 lifetime reviews. It was also the trade with the widest internal spread: several of the lowest scores in the entire study were electrical companies with unclaimed profiles, no website and no review activity.
The gap between a well-run electrical profile and a neglected one is wider here than in any other trade, and the volume needed to close it is smaller.

Across all 100 companies the median business held 123 lifetime reviews at a 4.8 rating, so the sample is not short of reviews in aggregate. What the sample is short of is recent reviews and replies. The weak group's median of roughly 0.42 reviews per month means most of them add a review every two to three months, which is slower than customer memory.
Customer language was remarkably consistent. Across every profile in the study the most-mentioned review themes were knowledgeable staff, furnace repair, polite staff, knowledgeable technician and furnace installation. Customers describe people and specific jobs, not brands or slogans. Companies whose websites used the same vocabulary as their reviews tended to score higher on website relevance.
How the timing figures were derived. Google Maps shows relative review dates such as "3 months ago" rather than exact dates, and we sampled the latest 20 reviews per company. The 30, 90 and 365 day counts are therefore approximations based on those 20 reviews, not exhaustive counts.

The website findings are less about design than about existence and structure. Eleven of the 100 companies had no website at all on their profile, and three more had a website address that returned an error or a missing page when a customer would have clicked it. A dead link on a Google profile is worse than no link, because it consumes the click and returns nothing.
Among companies that did have sites, the difference was depth. Strong companies had separate pages for the work they do, so a search for water heater repair could land on a water heater page rather than a homepage. Location pages were rarer than expected in both groups, which suggests a genuine opening: only 34 of the 100 companies had any city or service-area page, and among the 50 companies in the comparison groups it was 9 of the strong 25 against 2 of the weak 25.
Tap-to-call is the one conversion element that clearly tracked with visibility. Nearly every strong company had a phone number a mobile user could tap; fewer than half the weak group did.

Three patterns held across all ten markets.
Visibility collapses with distance, quickly. Most companies in the study held respectable positions within a mile or two of their address and disappeared entirely at the outer ring of the grid. A company can be number one at its own front door and unfindable in the suburb it advertises to.
Coverage is uneven by keyword, not just by geography. Companies frequently ranked well for their primary phrase and vanished on the emergency phrase, or the reverse. Only a minority held top-ten coverage across all three keywords. This is why a single rank check on a single term tells an owner almost nothing.
Nobody owned their market. The best top-three coverage in the entire study was under 60 percent of grid points, and the median company sat near 11 percent. Even the strongest performers had large parts of their own market where a competitor appeared instead of them.

Section 13
The most common mistakes we saw
- Treating reviews as a total rather than a habit. Companies with hundreds of reviews and nothing in the last quarter consistently sat in the weak group.
- Never replying. 28 of the 100 companies had not replied to a single one of their last 20 reviews.
- A website that does not load. Three companies were advertising a link that returned an error. Eleven had no site at all.
- One page for every service. Half the sample expected a single homepage to answer water heater, drain, sewer and emergency searches.
- No tap-to-call. Over half the weak group forced a mobile customer to copy a phone number by hand.
- Unclaimed profiles. Nine companies had not claimed the listing that represents them in search results.
- Judging visibility from one search. Owners search their own business name or check from their office, where they always look fine, and never see the grid points where they are absent.

Ordered by the size of the gap this study actually observed, not by what is easiest to sell.

None of these are ranking guarantees. They are the operational habits that distinguished the companies who were visible from the companies who were not, in this sample, at this moment in time.
Section 15
Limitations
Read the findings with all of the following in mind.
- Rankings vary. Google Maps results differ by device, personalization, search history and time of day. Every grid in this report is a snapshot taken inside one seven-day window.
- Ten markets, not all of Michigan. Findings describe the ten markets studied. They do not automatically extend to other Michigan cities or other states.
- The sample deliberately mixes strong and weak companies. Selection drew from position 1, position 3 and deeper in the results, so these numbers are not a portrait of the typical Michigan contractor.
- No causal claims. This is a descriptive benchmark. We did not test what causes rankings, and nothing here should be read as "do X and you will rank".
- No call, lead or revenue data. We had no access to any company's phone logs, bookings or sales. Visibility is not the same as business outcome.
- Review timing is approximate. Maps reports relative review dates, and we sampled the latest 20 reviews per company.
- Some profile fields could not be measured. The services list, business description and additional categories are not reliably exposed in the Maps interface and are reported as unmeasurable.
- Data changes daily. Our own quality control caught a company gaining a review between two collection passes.
- The algorithm is not public. Google does not publish how local rankings are determined, so any interpretation of these patterns is inference.
